University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) hosted its annual Welcome Week Aug. 22 - 26, welcoming both new and returning Gators back to campus with an exciting week of events.

Through new and creative UHD Welcome Week events, as well as tried and true traditions such as "Chicken and Waffles with the President" and "Pizza with the Professors," students were treated to breakfast from Shipley's Donuts, Texas Taco & BBQ, care packages sponsored by Walmart and much more.

Getting and staying involved is one of the most important things students can do while at UHD. During Welcome Week, several student organizations and campus departments hosted tables to share information about their organizations with students. It offered an opportunity for students to explore their interests and passions, and learn about extracurricular activities at UHD.

Food, fun, and free giveaways — the three key things all college students can't get enough of - were available at Gator Pit Welcome Stations and distributed by Welcome Week volunteers.

One of the most popular events was the Sports and Fitness Welcome Back Bash located on the north deck, which included lots of dance moves and giveaways. Another popular attraction was the graffiti wall, hosted by UHD's W.I. Dykes Library staff. This wall-sized collage gave students the opportunity to post their names and welcome messages to the nearly 14,000 students enrolled at the University this semester.

"Welcome Week was a huge success," said Tremaine Kwasikpui, Director of Student Activities. "It was so rewarding to see the camaraderie and school pride displayed by our students as they learned about UHD, made new friends and had some fun at the start of the new school year."

Welcome Week concluded with Movie Night featuring "Captain America: Civil War." Sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, the event was exclusive to UHD students and free of charge.

This year's Welcome Week has been one for the books. Check out these photos to recap last week's events from the ball pit in UHD portico area all the way to the 26,000-square-foot Welcome Center.

"Student Activities really wanted to provide activities and events for the total campus," Kwasikpui said. "There was something here for everyone. Thank you to all of those organizations, departments and volunteers who helped make this week a success."
