'Walk 2 Vote' Event on Oct. 23 Aims to Encourage Students to Vote

The UHD Student Government Association will again host "Walk 2 Vote," a march dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of voting and to encouraging voter participation, especially among university and college students. The Walk 2 Vote 2014 march will commence from the South Deck of the One Main Building on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m., and will feature on-site voter registration as well as keynote speakers from the Houston community.

The results of the Walk 2 Vote 2012 event were truly unprecedented, as over 55 percent of the UHD community registered and voted. This figure is exceptional compared to the University's counterparts at 5-15 percent, according to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University.

Between Aug. and Oct. 2012, the Student Government Association (SGA) registered over 2,500 students to vote. Mayor Annise Parker, over 700 UHD students, and other distinguished guests attended the Walk 2 Vote 2012 event.

UHD has had tremendous success in its short history of this grassroots movement, and SGA looks forward to the community's continued participation and dedication to the event's success.
