Uzman Selected for National Biology Education Leadership Group

By: Mary Ann Cozza

Akif Uzman, interim dean of the College of Sciences and Technology, was recently selected to serve as a member of the Vision & Change Leadership Fellows Team for PULSE (Partnership for Undergraduate Life Sciences Education), a national leadership group for implementing recommendations for biology education at universities.

According to Uzman, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health convened a group of experts several years ago to look at biology education in the USA as a model component of science education. The group produced a document called Vision and Change, which represented their findings and recommendations, and invited 40 individuals across the country to develop a model for implementation.

As a member of the Vision & Change Leadership Fellows Team, Uzman will work with the other Fellows throughout this year-long process to describe thoughtful and creative approaches to implementing Vision & Change recommendations. The team will engage a broad cross-section of the nation's undergraduate life science/biology community in identifying and prioritizing strategies for implementing biology education reform. Fellows will serve an important and visible role in representing this ongoing effort at the national level.
