Urban Ed Faculty Attend Literacy Award Ceremony
The Houston Center for Literacy (HCL) hosted the Mayor's Literacy Leadership Award Breakfast on Thursday, May 9, with Drs. Noel Bezette-Flores, Myrna Cohen, Viola Garcia, and Leigh Van Horn in attendance.
Van Horn was recently appointed a member of the Advisory Board for the HCL. The event recognized major donors to literacy in Houston and encouraged attendees to be advocates for literacy in this city, where one in five are not literate. Mayor Anise Parker noted the importance of literacy and education, stating that an associate's degree is the base requirement for many of the current and future jobs in the Greater Houston Area. Attendees were also inspired by the words of Michelle Rodriguez, the Learner of the Year Recipient.
"We had a chance to visit with Ms. Rodriguez after her address," stated Van Horn. "She told us that she was nervous as this was her first public speaking opportunity, but pleased to be able to share her success with us. Ms. Rodriguez has attained her GED and is now attending classes at the Houston Community College where she is studying psychology and wellness/health. She hopes to start her own business and will be looking to the University of Houston - Downtown for her continuing education needs!"
It was an honor and a privilege to attend this breakfast. As always, I am so proud to be one of the advocates for UHD!"
