Mateo Muñoz, a senior student at Cypress Park High School, CyFair ISD is planning to major in Business and he hopes to one day open his own business and offer a scholarship program to other students, as well as basic training of running a business. He said, “While the scholarship money would help to pay for my education, I see it as more than just a way to have less debt, it’s a way to inspire and bring my community together through not only example, but action... This scholarship is just the first step in my plan, it is the foundation for a better future.”

The Tu Futuro scholarship program resulted from a partnership and collaboration between Univision Houston and the University of Houston-Downtown. The program was launched in January 2021 for high school seniors residing in the Greater Houston area with the purpose of awarding a local student a full scholarship. Tu Futuro scholarship is part of Univision Houston Contigo (With You) community empowerment initiative.

“Our future is brighter thanks to young people like Mateo Muñoz and the hundreds of students who applied for this scholarship. It’s an honor for Univision Houston to partner with the University of Houston-Downtown to help high school students pursue their higher education and fulfill their college dreams, without worrying about financial barriers,” said John Hannon, President and General Manager, Univision Houston. “We are thrilled with our UHD partnership, and together, look forward to growing and enhancing the program in future years”

“This partnership exemplifies what great public-private cooperation can do. Together, we’ve been able to mobilize a group of young students to compete for a quality education. Beyond the scholarship, our goal is to expand access and this partnership has allowed for us to interact with students who might not have thought of UHD as a consideration,” said Daniel Villanueva, UHD Vice President for Enrollment Management.
