UHD to Host Gardening Events

UHD's Center for Urban Agriculture and Sustainability (CUAS) is hosting two gardening events dedicated to educating both urban food growers and composters.

The first is a daylong conference aimed to provide a platform for urban food growers and experts of agriculture and horticulture to share and exchange ideas on urban food production. CUAS is teaming up with Texas A&M University's AgriLife Extension and Prairie View A&M University to host the Houston Urban Food Conference from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., July 27 at UHD. Tickets can be purchased online.

The second event invites gardeners to learn the benefits of bokashi and vermicomposting. Bokashi composting involves using all kinds of kitchen scraps (including meat and dairy), mixed with inoculated bran to speed up the composting process. Vermicomposting incorporates the use of composting worms to turn waste into nutrient-rich worm castings. The composting class will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., August 11 at UHD. Registration and details are available online.
