UHD Students Successfully Lobby the City of Houston for Upgraded Parking Lots

Student Government Association (SGA) leaders and other students, along with Dean of Students Sara Jahansouz, spoke before the Houston City Council this week to encourage the Council to vote in favor of funding to upgrade three metered parking lots surrounding the UHD campus. The City later voted to approve the item, which will enhance safety and improve the aesthetics of these heavily used lots.

The action of these UHD advocates complemented previous efforts of the UHD Administration to have the City repair pot holes, replace damaged guardrails, and improve lighting in the Girard Street metered lot, located adjacent to the Jesse H. Jones Student Life Center, and in two other metered lots located underneath I-10 east of Main Street.

"I am very proud of the SGA representatives and other students who proactively joined our efforts to encourage improved parking areas surrounding campus," said President Bill Flores. "This is an excellent example of students learning about civic engagement and the political process and gaining from it."

Congratulations to the students for their successful efforts and for exercising their right to petition local leaders to make improvements for the benefit of the community!
