UHD Students Receive Prestigious Scholarship

Thursday, April, 21, seven University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) students were selected among 1,150 American undergraduate students from 377 colleges and universities across the U.S to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. The scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and is awarded to students interested in studying or interning abroad during the summer 2016 academic term. Sandra Medina, Maria Santos, Nidia Barrientos, Marina Garcia, Marleen Gomez and Etelvina Umana will all participate in the UHD Spanish Immersion in Costa Rica program, while Tajmina Aakhi will study in Bangalore, India.

Gilman scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad or internship program costs. The program aims to diversify the students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions to which they travel. Scholarship recipients gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages and economies and graduate better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector.

Students receiving a Federal Pell Grant from two- and four-year institutions who will be studying abroad or participating in a career-oriented international internship for academic credit are eligible to apply. The program is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
