UHD Staffer Completes 70.3-mile Galveston Ironman

David McCoy is not only tough, he's determined. The UHD multi-media engineer in the IT Department recently completed his first Ironman and triathlon at the 2012 Memorial Hermann Ironman 70.3 Texas Sunday, April 1, in Galveston.

The race involved a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and a 13.1-mile run. McCoy finished the grueling race in 7 hours and 10 minutes.

"The race was fun and a great learning experience for me," McCoy said. "I plan on doing a few more short triathlons before attempting the full Ironman series again. I'm also looking into ultra-marathons, which are distances over the standard 26.2 miles, for later this year."

To train for the April Ironman, McCoy completed an hour-long Crossfit workout, which involves cardio, gymnastics and weightraining, followed by a supplemental endurance workout like swimming, cycling or running, all before he reported to work at 1 p.m. His dedication definitely paid off and he deserves a big congratulations from everyone at UHD!
