UHD SGA Bolsters Voter Registration Efforts with Annual Walk 2 Vote Campaign

Vote

On Thursday, Oct. 21, the University of Houston-Downtown Student Government Association (SGA) will host its annual Walk 2 Vote event. The tradition began more than 10 years ago and aims to motivate people to participate in elections.

In conjunction with Walk 2 Vote, SGA has hosted several voter registration drives at UHD, which have resulted in more than 200 newly registered voters.

Walk 2 Vote will begin at noon on the UHD South Deck. Participants will then walk to 1019 Congress Ave. where the rally will end at 3 p.m.

“Voting is your voice, and exercising that right is how you inflict change,” said SGA Vice President Michelle Duvall. “I hope everyone starts to realize how important local elections are and see why we should stay proactive when it comes to voting."

The event will also include free food, drinks, and a chance to go home with a free t-shirt and wristbands.

In addition to the Oct. 21 rally, UHD will host a Walk to Vote kick-off event — Being Informed Matters — on Oct. 19 where Jolt Action representatives Daniela Mackin and Jesus Zamora will lead conversations on the importance of voting and discuss what’s on the November 2021 ballot. That event takes place at UHD room A622 from 3 to 4 p.m. People can also attend virtually via Zoom. Registration for the event is available online.

The continued efforts of getting people registered to vote come amid new changes to voting laws in the State of Texas. Election Day is Nov. 2.
