The Department of Urban Education and the College of Public Service are honored to announce that Bernardo E. Pohl, Jr., Ph.D., assistant professor of urban education, will be one of the recipients of the 2016 McGraw Hill Distinguished Scholar Award, which will be bestowed at the annual meeting of the Ethnographic Qualitative Research Conference (EQRC).

Each year, the EQRC honors five recipients for their dedication, service and scholarship in the area of ethnographic and qualitative research. In his work, Pohl advocates a holistic teaching approach and a moral quest for equality and social justice in special education and social studies. He also serves as a conference peer-reviewer and associate editor for the Journal of Behavioral and Social Sciences at EQRC.

Colleagues and educators have expressed appreciation for Pohl's scholarship and service, and his work has been recognized previously. He was awarded the 2014 Alumni Star Award by the College of Education at UH-Main. His book, The Moral Debate on Special Education, was nominated for the 2015 Outstanding Book Award at the American Association of Research Education.

The award ceremony will take place on Feb. 1, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
