President's Message: New Resources to Help Those Affected by Harvey

Dear UHD Community:

Houstonians continue to recover from damage incurred during Harvey. Among those who are putting their homes and personal lives back together are many members of the University of Houston-Downtown community.

With that in mind, support funds and resources have been created to assist our Gator family during this time.

UHD faculty and staff members affected by Harvey can apply for the Employee Gator Relief Fund. This fund will provide a one-time award of up to $500 that can be applied to temporary housing, food, transportation and other needs. UHD employees can learn more about this fund and apply for it here. Funds are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

And, starting on Sept. 18, Ruama Camp will join UHD as the University’s first Disaster Assistance Specialist. This position was created to assist students and employees with their immediate needs regarding FEMA applications, referrals to community partners and disaster assistance programs, and partnerships with faith-based and community-based organizations that support disaster relief. Ms. Camp previously was employed by Interfaith Ministries as its liaison to Harris County during disasters and worked with FEMA through Allison, Katrina and Rita.

Her office is in N441, and she can be contacted at disasterassistance@uhd.edu or 713-221-8091. Her fax number is 713-223-7491.

Faculty, staff and students can learn more about university and community resources at UHD’s Harvey Information and Resources site.

Thank you for your service to our University. Your commitment to this institution is helping it recover from this historic storm. More work remains, but with the support of our Gator family, the University will no doubt emerge stronger than ever.

Sincerely,

Dr. Juan Sánchez Muñoz
UHD President
