President's Message: Recovering from Harvey

Dear UHD Community,

Harvey has passed us, and the sun is shining over Houston today. The recovery process, however, is just beginning and will take some time. Our University withstood this terrible storm, but I am well aware that many of you are still coping with its aftermath.

Please know that your families and homes should be a priority at this time. The University of Houston-Downtown reopens Sept. 5, but many of you may be faced with looming issues related to Harvey. While it’s important that UHD resume its educational mission, your wellbeing also is crucial.

If you are still facing challenges next week, contact your professors or supervisors. I am urging our entire University family to work together as the city continues to recover from Harvey. Our faculty and staff should be mindful of those community members getting back on their feet following this storm.

I also want to assure our community that UHD will be ready for your return. I’ve been to campus to observe the damage and the work being done to repair our University. I am amazed at the progress that’s been made. Once again, I commend our diligent staff members who are working around the clock to ensure that our facilities and online services are fully operational. These are dedicated professionals who spent time away from their families and homes to restore UHD. Their service to our University and the community is beyond measure, and they exemplify what being a Gator is all about.

I also want to acknowledge the many UHD community members who jumped into action to lend a hand to others. I’ve seen several reports of faculty, staff and students who are volunteering at area shelters and collecting donations. Your efforts are truly inspiring, and I know this work will continue when we return to campus.

UHD has many resilient community members, and I know that this University will emerge from Harvey as a stronger institution. Please remember, however, that all of you can lend a hand to our students in need through the Gator Relief Fund, which supports those affected by Harvey.

The worst is behind us, but we are still on the road to recovery. Harvey’s rains soaked this city but did not dampen our spirits. We remain UHD Strong.

I look forward to seeing you next week.

Sincerely,

Dr. Juan Sánchez Muñoz
UHD President
