UHD Powerlifting Wins Sixth National Collegiate Championship

The UHD Powerlifting team won its sixth consecutive World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters (WABDL) National Collegiate Championship on Saturday, April 20, at Monster Gym and Sports Complex in Kingwood, Texas. It was a record-setting day for the UHD team, whose members set numerous Texas state records, as well as several national and world records.

Coach John Hudson was proud of the team's performance and said his athletes each gave 110% effort. "What more could a coach want from his or her athletes," he asked.

The WABDL Collegiate Championships is a two-lift format, combining the bench press and the deadlift using a co-ed roster. Below are the individual highlights from Saturday:

Bench Press -

Freshman Dorthy Tran placed first in the 165-weight class with a national collegiate record of 210.3 pounds.

Freshman Tiffany Luckett placed first in the 198-weight class, breaking her own junior world record and national collegiate record, with a press of 292 pounds. Luckett also won the award for the heaviest women's bench press of the day.

Junior Jaime Villa placed first in the 275-weight class with a bench press of 507 pounds, becoming only the second UHD lifter to successfully bench press over 500 pounds in competition. Villa won the award for the heaviest men's bench press of the day.

Deadlift -

Freshman Tiffany Luckett placed first in the 198-weight class with a junior world record and national collegiate record of 424.2 pounds. She also won the award for the heaviest women's deadlift of the day.

Freshman Jordan Glenn placed first in the 198-weight class, breaking his own teen 18-19 world record and national collegiate record with a pull of 685.4 pounds. He also won the award for the heaviest men's deadlift of the day.

Freshman Jonathan Bradfield placed first in the 181-weight class with a 600.7 pull. Bradfield is the lightest UHD powerlifting team member to break the 600-pound mark in the deadlift.

UHD lifters set a total of 11 Texas state records, seven national records and three world records.

Up next for the Gator powerlifting team? The 2014 USA Powerlifting National Collegiate Championships, which will be held in Orlando, Florida and will mark UHD's first opportunity to take on Texas A&M University and the University of Texas in head-to-head competition.
