UHD Partnership with Taiwanese Police Institution Continues

Summary

By Mike Emery

For more than 10 years, the partnership between the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) and the Central Police University (CPU) of Taiwan has promoted a cultural exchange of ideas regarding law enforcement. At the heart of this partnership is Dr. Hsiao-Ming Wang, professor of criminal justice and UHD Bayou Connection Program Director. This summer, Wang returned to CPU to continue sharing his knowledge of criminal justice with both students and CPU's leadership.

Wang met with CPU President Chien-Sheng Tiao who extended his congratulations to Dr. Juan Sánchez Muñoz for his recent appointment as UHD President. President Tiao expressed his intentions to meet him in the near future.

CPU is the top police education institution offering bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in Taiwan. The partnership between UHD and CPU began in 2005. That year, the first CPU delegation visited UHD. Recognizing the value of this collaborative relationship, UHD and CPU leaders signed a memorandum of understanding to promote joint research and a student exchange program.

During the past 12 years, more than 200 CPU students studied at UHD and about 40 UHD criminal justice students visited CPU. Among the success stories from this partnership is CPU alum Yun-Lien Lai, who completed a Master of Science in Criminal Justice at UHD in 2007 and is now an associate professor at CPU.

Recently, Wang was invited to Taiwan to speak on financial crime and border security with CPU doctoral and undergraduate students, respectively.
