By Mike Emery

The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) Northwest continues to expand its services to students in Greater Houston. This fall, the institution will begin delivering three new degree programs, and more are on the way in 2018. Beginning fall 2017, the following degrees will be offered at UHD Northwest:

  • Bachelor of Arts, Corporate Communication
  • Bachelor of Science, Psychology
  • Bachelor of Business Administration, Supply Chain Management

With these additions, UHD Northwest's total undergraduate program offerings is 22. Additionally, the University offers three graduate programs and four graduate certificates.

Next fall, UHD Northwest will begin delivering a new Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences in Engineering Technology.

Students interested in learning more about these degrees can visit UHD Northwest or contact Maria Estrada, assistant director of Off Campus Operations; Dale Higginbotham, coordinator/advisor; or Kim Constantine, coordinator/advisor.

Since 2010, UHD Northwest has delivered courses at Lone Star College-University Park (20515 State Highway 249) to serve the growing communities of Cypress, Tomball, Spring/Klein, Katy, Waller and The Woodlands. Approximately, 1,500 students are enrolled at this institution.

The degree growth at UHD Northwest complements an expansion of its facilities. Last year, UHD Northwest added 8,137 square feet of academic space.

In addition to UHD Northwest, UHD delivers courses at Lone Star College (LSC) campuses in Kingwood and CyFair. Recently, UHD and LSC signed an articulation agreement to create seamless pathways between institutions. Provisions in this agreement included UHD advisors located at LSC campuses, joint admissions and degree maps with detailed outlines of courses to guide students toward UHD undergraduate programs.

"We're pleased to add these undergraduate degrees to our offerings," said Louis D. Evans III, executive director of Off-Campus Locations and Online Coordination. "There is a growing demand for higher education in this area, and more bachelor's degrees at UHD Northwest will help more Houstonians achieve their academic goals."

The agreements signed by UHD and LSC reflect both institutions’ commitment to the Houston Guided Pathways to Success (Houston GPS) initiative. This multi-institutional partnership fosters collaboration among area colleges and universities with the goal of helping students graduate on time and with less debt. Additionally, Houston GPS is focused on streamlining the transfer process between local community colleges and universities.
