UHD Librarian Named ALA Emerging Leader for 2012

UHD is proud to congratulate Jovanni Lota, instruction reference librarian, for being named to the 2012 American Library Association's (ALA) Emerging Leaders program.

Seventy-seven people were chosen from a pool of over 200 for the program that is designed to enable library staff and information workers from across the country to participate in project planning workgroups, to network with peers and to have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity early in their careers.

"I am really honored to be selected," Lota said. "I am excited to learn and grow in the profession and to gain leadership experience and skills that I can bring back to UHD."

For the required program research project, Lota hopes to be approved to travel to Cuba and study their literacy programs and practices.

"Cuba has a 100 percent literacy rate, which is incredible. If we could mirror their system in libraries and in the education system, that would be amazing," she said.

Lota also noted how grateful she was for the support of UHD and her colleagues.
