A police funeral such as that held in honor of Deputy Sheriff Goforth last week is "a way for the community - our community - to cope with a senseless and tragic death of one who is both our symbolic and actual guardian," said Larry Karson, UHD assistant professor of criminal justice. "Deputy Sheriff Goforth's murder tears at the very fabric of our society and his funeral helps us all deal with that break, officer and civilian alike," continued Karson, who is a retired U.S. Customs Service agent. "It's not only the funeral of a spouse and a son, it is a funeral of one of our [society's] sons - a son who stood between the innocent and the evil that sometimes befalls a community."
