UHD Helps Celebrate Houston's 175th

By: Mary Ann Cozza

Happy birthday Houston! From August 2011 to June 2012 Houston will be celebrating its 175th birthday with dozens of historical events and exhibits, and UHD has joined the party.

"Working with Mayor Annise Parker and her staff, a group of Houston nonprofit organizations have come together to celebrate Houston's 175th birthday," says the Houston 175 website. "Among the many projects planned are a kick-off Birthday Bash, 10 exhibitions and a 128-page full-color catalog, a history conference, My Houston is Here, a photography project for all Houstonians, a film series and more."

UHD is proud to be a part of Houston 175 by hosting a historical exhibit focused on Houston's education system. "Educating Houston: 1836-2011 explores the beginnings of education in Houston from its earliest forays into a cluster of institutions that today serve the fourth largest city in the United States."

On display will be historical photos, artifacts and a timeline of important events in Houston's educational history.

The exhibit, sponsored by UHD's O'Kane Gallery, is open to the public and available to view from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, Oct. 29 through Nov. 6 and is located at the Willow Street Pump Station, 811 North San Jacinto St. in downtown Houston. An opening reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 29.
