UHD Criminal Justice Students Participate in Reentry Program
On Monday, Feb. 1, the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) and Harris County Sheriff's Office began the sixth reentry training for all community partners and students from Dr. Judith Harris' senior seminar class. The training is extensive and requires both students, and community partners to go through a series of discussions regarding what it means to work in HCSO reentry. The guidelines are also extensive - each person must go through the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) training before they are allowed in the jail. Paperwork is mandatory as are TB tests and criminal history checks.
This year, students have the privilege of working alongside the Sheriff's High Command, Human Resources and Media Affairs. Other placements that will be in reentry tanks are Mentoring Moms, Stars and Stripes, Freedom Project, Human Trafficking and Transgender inmates.
Senior seminar has now had five graduates who are working full time for the program.
