UHD COVID-19 Update: Texas Begins Reopening on May 1

Dear UHD Community,

Today, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is initiating Phase 1 of the state’s reopening plan. Certain businesses will be permitted to start reopening with limited occupancy and guidance from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

As President Muñoz stated in a recent message, all summer classes will remain online, and campus operations will continue online through the month of May. A date has not been set for a complete reopening of campus as of yet.

Like the state’s plan, UHD also will resume campus operations in phases. In doing so, it will follow recommendations from the UH System Task Force on Reopening (which includes members of the UHD Community). The University also will develop its own protocols with regard to reopening campus while respecting an Executive Order from the Governor’s Office directing schools and universities to remain closed.

Additional details regarding a campus reopening or faculty and staff returning to the University are forthcoming. All decisions will be made with the health and safety of our UHD Community as the top priority. Likewise, any move to resume operations will be made with guidance from health officials, and state and local leaders.

All details regarding a phased return to campus will be communicated once they are available. Until then, faculty and staff are encouraged to exercise caution during the state’s reopening this weekend. Continue to wash your hands regularly, practice effective social distancing and follow Harris County’s order to wear a protective mask in public.

Stay safe and stay healthy, Gators.
