UHD Celebrates Student Workers

Student workers are essential to many University of Houston-Downtown offices, colleges and departments. These part-time workers, work-study recipients and interns support the University while gaining valuable professional experience.

This week, UHD celebrates its student workers during National Student Employees Appreciation Week (April 12 - 18). In this edition of UHD News, we recognize just some of the Gators making a difference at the University.

Leboriah Chavez is a huge asset to UHD Sports & Fitness. She always brings a positive outlook and a contagious energy for our members. We really appreciate her valuable input and efforts. We truly believe in Leboriah and that her advocacy efforts for health and wellness will make a huge impact in the UHD community. And, Robert Gonzales is a hard worker and strives to make a difference not only for the UHD Sports & Fitness department but also with his members and coworkers. He always strives to help others as much as possible and his hard work is recognized and highly valued.” - Melissa Crews, UHD Fitness Coordinator

Sheila Ortega-Calvillo is a front desk administrator for Student Affairs. She is always professional and courteous. Even during this trying time, she has continued to use the tools available to her to promote the available support resources to her fellow Gators.” - Dietrich von Biedenfeld, Assistant Professor, UHD Marilyn Davies College of Business

Jazmine Avila has been such a delight and ray of sunshine to work with in both the Dean of Students Office and Disability Services (where I worked previously). She always has a positive attitude and big smile on her face that I look forward to seeing every morning. Jazmine has a team spirit and is willing to help out in any way she can, even if it means suiting up in the gator costume for an outdoor event on the warmest day of the year. - Dr. Meritza Tamez, Interim Dean of Students

“Student workers are essential to the Office of Student Activities. Elizabeth Benitez works very closely with me in Student Activities. She helps keep things organized, gathers the team and provides valuable insight when needed. I am thankful to have student employees like Elizabeth.” - Tremaine Kwasikpui, Director of Student Activities
