UH System Interim Provost Announced

Courtesy of Renu Khator, Chancellor, UH System

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Paula Myrick Short as Interim Senior Vice Chancellor of the University of Houston System and Interim Provost of the University of Houston. Dr. Short joined UH in 2012 as a Distinguished Professor in the College of Education and Director of the Institute for Policy, Research, and Evaluation. She previously served as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the Tennessee Board of Regents for more than a decade. Dr. Short also served in administration in the University of Missouri System as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, and was a department head at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she led the department to its first-ever ranking (#15) in U.S. News & World Report. She is the recipient of many national awards for her research and leadership.

Dr. Short will provide day-to-day operational direction to the Division of Academic Affairs. I have also asked her to provide leadership in reorganizing the Provost's Office in preparation for its transition to new leadership, and to initiate the process of building a case statement for the forthcoming capital campaign. Dr. Short will serve in this interim role, effective immediately, until a permanent Senior Vice Chancellor/Provost has been appointed. She will not be a candidate for the permanent position.

We will begin a national search to fill the position of Provost. If you have ideas or suggestions for this critically important position, I encourage you to email me your thoughts.

What each of you does is very important to this University's future, and I am grateful for your leadership and continued commitment to excellence. I wish you and your loved ones a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Warm regards,

Renu Khator
