Two Students to Receive Segal Award for Service

Two UHD students will receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for logging 300 community service hours each with Davis High School in the Houston Independent School District.

This $1,175 award can be used to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher education, to pay for educational training and to repay qualified student loans.

Students Xiomara Mundo and Shermara Connor participated in AmeriCorps' Students In Service program which provides education awards to college students who serve their community in critical needs areas.

Mundo said, "I had the opportunity to work with teachers and students from Davis High School. I tutored and helped students reached their full potential in subjects such as literature, writing and reading." She said she plans to use the award to help further her education and receive a master's degree in business.

Connor was unavailable for comment.
