'Tu Futuro' Scholarship: Univision Houston & UHD Partner for Third Consecutive Year

UHD and Univision Houston, the area’s leading Spanish-language television station, are partnering for the third consecutive year for the “Tu Futuro” (“Your Future”) scholarship program.

The 2021-2022 “Tu Futuro” scholarship was awarded to two students, Maria Castrejon, who graduated from KIPP Connect, KIPP ISD, and Kenneth Garcia, who graduated from Alief Early College High School, Alief ISD. Castrejon is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Completion Program (RN to BSN), and Garcia is majoring in Biology for a career in orthopedics. Both Castrejon and Garcia received full scholarships to UHD.

“The Tu Futuro scholarship program is one of my favorite community empowerment initiatives that we execute each year. It’s rare to be a part of something that presents an opportunity to witness a life-changing moment,” said Glenn Coleman, Vice President/Station Manager, Univision Houston. “For the very deserving recipients, these scholarships provide a path not only to a free college education, but also to economic empowerment for their families and our community at large. The magnitude of this program will not just be felt now, but hopefully for generations to come, as our winners will be forever impacted and pay it forward,” added Coleman. “Univision Houston could not ask for a better partner on this empowerment initiative than the University of Houston-Downtown, one of the leading educational institutions serving Houstonians.”

“Tu Futuro” is open to current high school seniors residing in the Houston area and will award one local student with a full scholarship covering the cost of a four-year undergraduate degree at UHD.

“This scholarship is making a difference in the community and most importantly in the Hispanic community,” UHD President Loren J. Blanchard said. “It is about creating opportunities for those who may not have thought they would have the financial means,” said Blanchard. “Yet they will receive not just the funding but also all the amenities in terms of support, guidance, and advisement to make sure they will cross the finish line, earn their degree, and move on to their respective career goals.”

Know a high school senior? Students are encouraged to register and apply before February 26, 2023. The “Tu Futuro” scholarship winner will be selected in March 2023 and awarded the scholarship in April 2023. An important requirement is to include an essay detailing “How A College Scholarship Will Help Me Positively Impact My Community.” To register and for additional information and complete scholarship rules, visit univisionhoustonbeca.com.
