Students Take a Trip to 'Memphis'

Recently, UHD students in COMM 3310's "Women, Men, and Communication" attended a live performance of the Broadway musical, "Memphis," as part of the University's initiative to support high impact experiences. The course, taught by Dr. Elizabeth Hatfield, assistant professor of interpersonal communication, in the Department of Arts and Communication, incorporated the musical into class assignments this semester.

For the students in COMM 3310, the musical demonstrated how course theory and concepts can be used to analyze cultural artifacts.

"I wanted to share my love of theater and media analysis with students studying gender and gender theory," Hatfield said. "'Memphis' offered a great text for students to consider many theories discussed in the course."

Tickets were purchased with support from the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, through grants endorsing high impact practices in the classroom.
