Students Organize and Participate in African-American Read-In
In honor of Black History Month, UHD's Departments of Urban Education and English hosted an African-American Read-In on Feb. 21. The event was sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English in conjunction with the group's 23rd National American Read-In.
UHD students read the poems, speeches and works of Nikki Giovanni, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, Frederick Douglass, Alice Walker, Lucille Clifton and Jesse Jackson.
Students from assistant professor Colin Dalton's literacy course, READ 3305, created event posters and flyers, secured a food donation of red beans and rice from Treebeards Restaurant, created the program, read at the event and recruited readers and audience members.
