Students Bring Holiday Cheer to Local Children

Last week, more than 30 students from the University of Houston-Downtown joined Volunteer Houston to stuff 8,000 holiday backpacks for children attending Title 1 schools in Houston at the organization's annual Visit from St. Nick's Packing Party. Volunteers loaded backpacks with small toys and books to brighten the days of these young children.

The UHD team, coordinated by the Center for Public Service and Family Strengths and the STAR program, was made up of students from the Student Government Association, Summer Fast Track Institute, Gator Guides and Branden Kuzmick's Freshman Seminar class. Several students will return to Volunteer Houston in December to participate in the distribution of backpacks, read the story of St. Nicholas to students and make clay seed bowls that the children can plant at a later time.
