Student Scholarship Winners Honored at Luncheon

Interim Dean Leigh Van Horn from the UHD College of Public Service recently hosted a luncheon for C3 (Campus to Community Coalition) Service Learning Transfer Scholarship recipients to recognize their contributions to service in the community. Eight $1,000 scholarships were awarded to transfer students who met the scholarship requirements. The students had transferred at least 30 hours from San Jacinto Community College and Lone Star College, had a minimum GPA of 3.0 and had a strong record of service.

The awardees are Angelica Armenta, education major; Jacqueline Bui, biology major; Amanda Carnes, education major; Elysia Gomez, psychology major with a minor in business; Namrata Kaystha, computer science major; Teri Mills, psychology major; Apexa Patel, accounting major; and Heather Westover, urban education major. The students also contributed to a short video sharing their stories of success and commitment to community service.

UHD President Bill Flores, formerly the board president of C3 where the funding originated, attended the event and recognized the awardees. Also in attendance were Noel Bezette-Flores, executive director for the Center for Public Service and Family Strength (CPSFS); Liza Alonzo, assistant dean of Students; Tomikia LeGrande, dean of Enrollment Management; and Paulette Purdy, director of College Administration and Operations for the College of Public Service.

This is an inaugural scholarship that will be awarded annually from the CPSFS, housed in the College of Public Service. The mission of CPSFS is to promote public service, family strengths and civic engagement at UHD, to build partnerships with community organizations, educational institutions, and public and private agencies and corporations.

The Center enhances the educational experiences of UHD students, PK-12 students and teachers, and the quality of life of residents of the Houston community through collaborations, research studies, publication of an academic journal, and programs that reinforce academic learning and civic values among students, foster ethnic and racial harmony, strengthen families, advocate for underrepresented individuals and families, and facilitate the dissemination of best family-centered practices.
