Student Activities and STAR Program Partner to Create the Gator Leadership Academy

To prepare students to assume increased leadership responsibility across campus and within the community, the Office of Student Activities has partnered with the Student Transition and Retention (STAR) Program to create the Gator Leadership Academy, set to begin Feb. 27.

The Gator Leadership Academy (GLA) is a premier leadership-learning opportunity for current or aspiring student leaders or students wishing to enhance their leadership capacity so they can be more effective as leaders. A key goal of this initiative is to equip participants with leadership knowledge, skills and a basic understanding of how to create positive change in the UHD community and beyond. Academy creators expect that students will leave the program with the confidence to springboard into various leadership opportunities and further develop their leadership capacity. GLA is grounded in the Social Change Model of Leadership Development and the Leadership Identity Development Model.

By participating in GLA, students will receive priority consideration for various leadership positions across campus, including Gator Guides (STAR Program), O-Team Leaders, Camp Activities Board (CAB), Student Government Association (SGA), UHD Ambassadors, LeaderShape Institute, President's (Elite Gators) Ambassadors and student-involvement employment opportunities. Many of these leadership opportunities come with great responsibilities and a stipend.

Academy participants must attend all sessions in order to receive a certificate and receive priority consideration for the most coveted leadership opportunities at UHD. Students can choose to attend GLA sessions on Thursdays (section 1) or Fridays (section 2). However, all participants must attend the graduation on March 21.
