Staff Member Selected as TASSSP TRiO Achiever for 2014

shari bihmsShari Bihms, staff member of UHD's Upward Bound program, was recently selected as a TASSSP TRiO Achiever for 2014.

The Texas Association of Special Student Services Programs (TASSSP) highlights its annual high achievers - individuals who successfully completed the requirements of a TRiO program resulting in the completion of a baccalaureate or terminal degree from an accredited institution of higher education. (TRiO programs are targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs.)

A participate in Upward Bound, Bihms graduated at the top of her high school class and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Howard University, a master's degree in counseling from Prairie View A&M University and a law degree from Texas Southern University.

Today, Bihms works with the UHD Upward Bound program, is an attorney and also founded The Lady League, a program designed to teach young girls the basics of life, including topics like financial stability, the importance of a good reputation, understanding the SAT/ACT, and how to apply for college. Before opening her law practice, Bihms taught reading and English at M.C. Williams Middle School.

"Today, I am able to use my educational background and the supportive spirit from the Upward Board Program that accompanied me throughout my educational and personal life to affect this world positively. Now I can mentor, and share knowledge and wisdom with those coming behind me," she said.
