Since arriving at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD), Alan Modrow has dedicated himself to serving both the institution and his fellow students. Now, the incoming Student Government Association President will help address issues facing higher education across Texas.

Modrow was appointed to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s (THECB) Undergraduate Advisory Committee. The Committee is focused on developing ideas and strategies that benefit undergraduate education in Texas, as well as THECB’s 60x30 Plan (supporting the goal of having 60 percent of Texans having degrees or certificates by 2030). He is the first UHD student to serve on a THECB committee.

"It's an honor to be appointed as the first student to represent UHD for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board,” he said. “I feel grateful for the mentors and peers who have supported my efforts in creating a path to a more accessible and diverse higher education experience for students. I look forward to serving the University as well as the great state of Texas.”

Modrow, a senior political science major, was elected as SGA President this spring. He also has served as one of the inaugural UHD Blue Coats, who represent the institution at campus events and welcome dignitaries to the University. Presently, he is a member of UHD’s COVID-19 Response Task Force. The THECB Committee appointment represents Modrow’s latest effort in supporting UHD and its students.

“I’m proud to serve this university,” he said. “It has provided so many opportunities for me … and continues to offer rich experiences that help me grow personally and professionally. It’s only natural that I give back and hopefully inspire others to do the same.”
