Self-Defense Workshop Teaches Life-Saving Skills

Last week, Sports & Fitness sponsored a safety and self-defense workshop in which UHD students, faculty and staff learned effective techniques to ward off potential danger. UHD karate instructor Robert Henriksen demonstrated effective punching, blocking and kicking skills as well diversion tactics.

A UHD student who attended a previous Sports & Fitness karate class said the skills she learned there saved her life when an aggressor approached her in a parking lot. As she learned in the workshop, the student placed an obstacle between herself and her potential attacker, allowing her time to run away and call attention to her situation.

Members of the UHD community can learn these and other life-saving techniques in the Sports & Fitness karate classes taught by Henrikson beginning Tuesday, Sept.16 in the Student Life Center from 6:30. - 7:45 p.m. Class registration costs $10 for ten courses.

To register for karate, please visit the Membership Services desk on the third floor of the Student Life Center. For registration for future healthy workshops, please visit the Karate
