Professor Speaks at Congressional Hearing on Food Safety Issues

Peter Li, associate professor of political science, was invited to attend a Congressional Briefing in early April to address the public concern over food safety related to Chinese poultry product import. Li is a nationally-recognized scholar for his work on animal welfare in China.

The Congressional Briefing is triggered by public opposition to a Department of Agriculture plan to import poultry products from China to be served in the school nutrition programs. Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro has taken an interest in this issue and is the sponsor of a briefing on Chinese food safety. A panel of food safety experts and members who started the public campaign/petition were present to offer their views on the issue. Li addressed animal welfare problems regarding China's massive industrialized animal farming and its adverse impact on animal health and human health.
