President Flores Gives Keynote Address at Aga Khan Foundation Partnership Walk Kick-Off Event
UHD President William Flores recently served as the keynote speaker for the kick-off event of the 2014 Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) Partnership Walk/Run to End Global Poverty.
Funds raised through the Partnership Walk in Houston and other cities throughout the nation are used to build schools, irrigation systems, train teachers, provide health care and develop sustainable economies. AKF USA promotes self-sufficiency to empower communities to overcome poverty, hunger, illiteracy and illness in Asia and Africa.
The event also honored eight individuals who will serve as emissaries for the Partnership Walk, including Katya Glockner Dow, Monira Hamid-Kundi, Misti Pace- Krahl, Teresa Cox Reading, Rick Pal, Huma Nawab Haider, Noreen Khan-Mayberry and Lily Zhang.
During the event, guests were treated to performances of classical Indian dancing and Tajik dancing.
In his keynote address, President Flores noted, "Citizenship Month is a call to service. Through citizenship we build. This is our city and what you do every day makes it better through your service. But also, each of us also gains through our service and our giving. Serving others helps us find our passion, it energizes us, it enriches the soul and it provides purpose to our lives."
He called all attendees to participate in this year's upcoming Partnership Walk/Run, saying, "Let us walk together, let us serve together - so that together we will build a better Houston and a better world."
The 2014 Partnership Walk/Run, the 20th anniversary of the event in Houston, will be held Nov. 15 at Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston.
This event is part of the City of Houston's Citizenship Month, for which UHD is a primary sponsor.
