Dear University of Houston-Downtown Community,

Many of you are already aware that a student was shot last night. Fortunately, the student is recovering in the hospital, and we are wishing him the best.

This student was returning to his vehicle in the Naylor Street Lot at approximately 9:30 p.m. He noticed a suspect in his vehicle. The suspect shot the student, then fled on foot northbound on North Main.

UHDPD has increased patrols on campus and in our parking lots. While we have police and security officers patrolling the area, I encourage everyone to be aware of their surroundings. Pay close attention while walking to and from your vehicles and campus buildings. If you spot suspicious individuals on campus or in the area, do not attempt to engage them. Contact UHDPD, and our officers will investigate the situation. It is advisable to keep the UHDPD numbers programmed in your phones or other electronic devices - 713-221-8065 (non-emergency) and 713-221-8911 (emergency).

I also encourage everyone to make note of the many yellow emergency call boxes that are located throughout campus. More than 180 of these boxes are located throughout campus and in our parking lots. Knowing that these boxes are nearby can save time during an emergency. Also, our classrooms are equipped with phones that can be used to contact our department.

I also want to remind the community that UHDPD has security escorts available to accompany faculty, staff and students to their vehicles following work or class. This service is available 24 hours a day. Contact 713-221-8065 or drop by UHDPD (N118) to request this service.

Our students are our top priority. An incident such as this is difficult to experience as both a law enforcement professional and as a member of the UHD community. Everyone should know that UHD Counseling Services (S-402K) is available to discuss last night's events. Community members can talk with counselors confidentially by calling 713-500-3852. Our on-call counselor will be available at this number as well.
