Message from President Loren J. Blanchard: 2022 Updates for COVID-19

Dear UHD Community,
I hope everyone enjoyed a restful holiday season and remained healthy during the Winter Break.
As we enter 2022, it is very clear that we are not out of the woods with regards to COVID-19. Houston, like other major cities in the United States, is experiencing challenges caused by the Omicron variant.
Today, the University reopens, and staff and faculty are returning to campus. It goes without saying that we must work together to ensure that UHD remains a safe place to learn and work. Those habits that made a difference during 2021 can certainly support campus safety as we enter Spring 2022. Also, UHD remains a mask-friendly campus. In fact, mask dispensers are located throughout the University with free disposable face coverings for all who need them.
Perhaps the most important thing we can do to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and its variants is taking the necessary precautions if you are under the weather and getting tested if you have been exposed to COVID-19 or have symptoms.
UHD’s Curative testing site continues to operate seven days a week, and other testing locations can be found throughout the Houston community.
Please know that UHD will continue to offer vaccinations and booster shots this spring. Dates and details will be announced regarding these pop-up vaccination clinics on campus. Appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine also can be found throughout the Houston area.
I realize we’re very much in a familiar place with regards to COVID-19, but we must remain focused on the safety and success of everyone who arrives on our campus. Working together, we can ensure that our University continues to be ready to respond to any challenges posed by the pandemic.
The University will continue to monitor Omicron’s effects on our community and will provide updates to students, faculty and staff as we prepare for Spring 2022. In the meantime, please continue to stay safe and healthy.
Sincerely,
Loren J. Blanchard, Ph.D.
President, University of Houston-Downtown
