Voting season will soon arrive, and the University of Houston-Downtown encourages all eligible voters to partake in this fundamental element of American democracy. Voting is regarded as both a right and a privilege, and for some students, this year will mark their very first time to participate in the process. Others may already be registered voters who have relocated to a different residence and need to update their information. As such, the University wants to ensure all students know how to register to vote in the upcoming election cycle.

You are eligible to vote in Texas if you meet all three of the following criteria:

• You are a U.S. Citizen
• You are a resident of Texas
• You will be 18 years old or older by November 3

During these difficult and extraordinary times, many students may have questions about registration deadlines and procedures. To make the voter registration process simple and convenient, use these easy-to-follow guidelines.

To register at a current address, visit register2vote.org. Simply complete and submit the online form, and expect to receive a document via mail with a pre-addressed, postage-paid envelope. Sign and date the document, place it in the envelope provided, and submit it in the mail before October 5.

For students who have relocated due to the pandemic or other reasons, apply for a mail in ballot by registering to vote at a different address at register2vote.org. Complete and submit the online form, and look for a document to arrive via mail with a pre-addressed, postage-paid envelope. Sign and date the document, include it in the envelope provided, and place it in the mail before October 18. Afterward, students will receive a mail in ballot, which needs to be completed and mailed by Election Day – November 3.
