Literacy Society Attends Theater Production of "The Giver"

The Urban Educator's Literacy Society at UHD recently attended a Main Street Theater production of "The Giver," a popular novel often taught in middle school English and reading courses. Assistant Professor Colin Dalton, a cosponsor for the organization, attended the play with students and encouraged them to include their future pupils in theater arts in order to improve their reading comprehension, oral communication skills and engagement in school activities.

The novel, by Louis Lowry, is the first of a series of four and won the 1994 Newbery Medal, given by the Association for Library Service to the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. For this reason, the novel is commonly read in the UHD Department of Urban Education's Foundations of Literacy EC-12 course, one of the entry courses to the University's teacher preparation program.
