Leigh Van Horn Receives University Teacher of the Year Award
The Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (TCTELA) held its 50th annual conference last weekend at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Houston. The TCTELA's mission is to advance the literacy growth of all Texas students by developing a network of diverse professionals and by providing professional development based on best practices in education.
On Friday evening, the organization honored award winners in categories of excellence, leadership and lifetime service at its membership celebration. Among the winners was Leigh Van Horn, dean of the UHD College of Public Service, who was honored as the 2015 University Teacher of the Year.
Along with her many accolades and accomplishments, the TCTELA noted that Van Horn is beloved by her students, and "has shaped thousands of children across this state. Her far-reaching impact is proof of excellence in not just teaching, but in humanity. She makes everyone she touches better. That is the mark of an excellent teacher."
The event program included quotes from Van Horn's current and former students, who praised her for dedication to teaching and her ability to uplift her students.
"I am pleased to receive this honor from an organization whose members I value and respect," said Van Horn.
