Journal Edited by Urban Ed Faculty Wins National Award

The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) recently recognized English in Texas, a journal edited by three UHD urban education faculty, as the first-place winner of its Affiliate Journal Award.

The award is given to an affiliate journal that demonstrates excellence in producing scholarly articles on issues and topics related to English language arts. English in Texas is a peer-reviewed journal of the Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (TCTELA). Co-editors include Leigh Van Horn, Kim Pinkerton and Carol Bedard of the UHD Department of Urban Education.

"This is a highly competitive award with journals being submitted from states around the nation. English in Texas received an honorable mention award last year, and this year, we have won the award for the best state journal in the nation," Van Horn said.

Van Horn, Pinkerton, Bedard and the TCTELA Board of Directors will be recognized at the NCTE annual convention Nov. 18 in Las Vegas.
