Interim President's Message: Homecoming 2020

Dear UHD Community,

Homecoming is a special tradition at all institutions of higher education, particularly the University of Houston-Downtown.

It’s a time when our Gators can come together and truly celebrate the University (virtually or through distanced campus events) and share a common appreciation for UHD’s mission and accomplishments within the region. Likewise, it’s a time for our alumni to reflect on their time at UHD and share their memories of what makes it a special part of their lives.

Homecoming 2020 commences this week with events conducted both virtually and on campus (with distancing and mask protocols in place). While many of us remain separated, let’s remember that Homecoming is driven by school spirit. Through Zoom, social media or other platforms, let’s show our support and pride for UHD and make this year’s Homecoming one to remember.

It is fitting that this year's theme is “Surviving and Thriving” as UHD is doing just that. Since March, our Gators have adapted to many changes (academically, professionally, and no doubt, personally) and UHD is indeed thriving thanks to your strength and commitment.

The week of Homecoming events officially kicks off on Monday, Oct. 19 and extends through Saturday, Oct. 24. True to tradition, my office is honored to host the annual President’s BBQ at noon, Oct. 20th on the South Deck. This will be one of the first opportunities that I can safely meet many of you in person. While we will be practicing the required etiquette regarding masks and distancing, I look forward to hosting our Gators as they pick up to-go items at this event.

A complete schedule of events is available on UHD’s Homecoming website and additional details are forthcoming.

These events are made possible by many members of our community, including the Student Government Association, Staff Council, Sports & Fitness, Student Activities, Alumni Relations, the Bike Club, Cosmetology Club, the Dean of Students Office, and those community members comprising the Homecoming Committee. I thank everyone involved in next week’s events for their hard work and creativity. Likewise, I commend all of you for your continued dedication to UHD. Your pride in the University is the driving force behind both Homecoming and UHD’s successes.

Thank you for everything you do to make UHD an outstanding institution! Happy Homecoming, Gators!

Sincerely,

Antonio D. Tillis, Ph.D.
