"Gator Grit" has become a term used to personify the spirit and determination of the University of Houston-Downtown community. It's only fitting that it's also the title of a new speaker series featuring regional leaders engaged in conversations that inspire courage, resolve and tenacity in our community.

To kick off the Gator Grit Speaker Series, the campus will host community leaders who played critical roles in the city's response to Harvey.

The series' inaugural event, Houston Heroes: Leadership During Difficult Times, will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 31 and will feature a reception and panel including UHD alumnus Ed Gonzalez, Harris County Sheriff; Jeff Lindner, meteorologist at Harris County Flood Control District and Samuel Peña, Houston Fire Chief.

The panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Laura Murillo, CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, will be followed by a Q&A session.
