'I am a Poet' Event at Houston Public Library Nov. 15

Faculty, staff and students are invited to the Houston Public Library for the "I am Poet" event — a community-driven event a part of Houston's annual Citizenship Month.

The free event will feature poetry readings by Houstonians to commemorate the life of poetry that thrives in the greater Houston metropolitan area.

Some of the young poets include participants from Houston area Harmony Public Schools. During the summer, Harmony English Language Arts teachers collaborated with University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) interim dean of the College of Public Service, Leigh Van Horn, Ph.D., experiencing a writing unit she authored: Empathetic Citizenry: Building Understanding, Refining Literacy, and Making a Difference in Houston, Texas.

Robin Davidson, Ph.D., professor of English and Houston's second poet laureate, will serve as master of ceremonies for this performance of poems showcasing the richly diverse cultures of the City of Houston.
