Hurricane Preparedness at UHD
With the Gulf Coast hurricane season underway, the UHD Emergency Management Team met in early June to go over the university's hurricane preparedness plan. The team reviewed the UHD Plan for Weather-related Emergencies, going over the steps that would be taken as a storm hit became more likely, making sure contact information was updated, reviewing the overall communication plan, and discussing the university's post-event Business Continuity Plan (BCP). Copies of both the Plan for Weather-related Emergencies and the BCP (summary version) are available for review through the university's Blackboard site. To view these log onto Blackboard (www.uhd.edu/blackboard/) using your regular (Outlook) user ID and password, and scan down to 'My Organizations', where the plans can be found.
There are several things that all UHD employees should consider as we move through this hurricane season:
- Is your contact information correct in PASS? Having a current cell phone number in the system will be especially important, as emergency text messaging is a key component of the larger communication plan. Contact information can also be updated through Faculty/Staff e-services (https://global.dt.uh.edu:8585/eservices/es/login.asp?MySelection=P).
- Have you discussed hurricane preparedness at your unit level? Make sure contact information is up-to-date at the department level, as information is often pushed out through division/department 'phone trees'.
- Familiarize yourself with the university's emergency website, which can be viewed at www.uhdemergency.info. In an emergency situation this site will be the primary source of information regarding the status of UHD.
