Houston Business Journal Names UHD MBA Program No. 1 in Houston

UHD received news this week that our Master of Business Administration Program in the College of Business now ranks at the top of Houston Business Journal's (HBJ) annual Largest Houston-Area MBA Programs list. In only two short years, our program has risen from smallest to largest in HBJ's rankings.

Even more remarkable is the fact that UHD's program experienced unprecedented growth in a time when many universities are facing declining enrollment in their MBA programs. Our MBA Program reflects UHD's emphasis on providing strong academic and career preparation as well as lifelong learning opportunities.

Mike Fields, Ph.D., dean of the College of Business, attributes the MBA Program's success to our faculty and staff's deep level of commitment. "The faculty embraced a close connection with industry and are producing a dynamic learning environment," Fields says. "The staff, both inside and outside the College, are providing students with world-class levels of service. That is a powerful combination."

While Fields is enthusiastic about the recognition this distinction will bring to UHD and the College of Business, he is "even more satisfied by the assessment and student satisfaction scores that were realized. To have over 85 percent of the students achieve defined learning goals, coupled with extremely high student satisfaction scores, makes a strong statement about the tremendous job faculty did in the classroom."

UHD's MBA Program recorded exponential enrollment growth for two years in a row, with more than 300 percent growth in fall 2014 and more than 100 percent in fall 2015. Enrollment currently numbers at 765 students.

Our MBA Program began in spring 2012 with a cohort of 20 students. Enrollment rose to 88 in fall 2013, when the young program ranked last among 13 MBA programs in HBJ's rankings. In fall 2014, enrollment grew to 380, and the program ranked fourth.

Kevin Barksdale, Ph.D., associate dean of graduate studies, directs the MBA program.

More information about the rankings can be found on the Houston Business Journal website (online account required). A copy of the issue is available in UHD's W.I. Dykes Library.
