Get in Shape with Sports & Fitness and GetFitTexas!

Courtesy of Sports and Fitness

Our awesome Sports and Fitness department has teamed with GetFitTexas! to encourage UHD employees to get healthy. According to Rhonda Scherer, assistant director of the department and UHD wellness coordinator, the program is a great tracking and motivational tool for employees to use on their path to health and fitness.

What is GetFitTexas!?

GetFitTexas! is a free online tracking tool, courtesy of the State of Texas, that allows you to keep a record of your physical activity so you can stay motivated, accountable and committed to your exercise routine.

Why Exercise?

When we don't exercise enough and eat more calories than we need, we gain weight. If left unaddressed, this can lead to overweight and obesity (more than 20% above your ideal weight). This extra weight can contribute to other diseases including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer.

The extra weight takes a toll on our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing; it also takes a toll on our families, friends, caregivers and communities.

Here is the challenge! UHD employees are encouraged to be physically active for 30 minutes at least five days a week in the GetFitTexas! State Agency Challenge. The program lasts from Jan. 14 to March 23.

To register, go to http://www.getfittexas.org/, click on Join Program under the heading GetFitTexas Online Activity Tracker, and select University of Houston-Downtown as your agency.

Sports and Fitness will give any UHD employee a free t-shirt with proof of program participation. Simply print a summary of your activity during the program time period and turn it into S&F. Remember, they're looking for 30 minutes a day, five days a week.
