Gators Go for Conference Championships This Weekend

Club sports seasons are winding down in Sports & Fitness, but two UHD club teams are playing for a conference championship this weekend to wrap up their Fall seasons.

Women’s Volleyball
The women’s volleyball club team is the No. 2 seed in this weekend’s Houston Club Sports Conference (HCSC) playoff tournament. The club team is coming off a big win over previously undefeated and first place team Prairie View A&M University Panthers on Oct. 26 to finish the Fall season at 4-1. The Gators defeated the Panthers in four sets to force a three-way tie for first place between UHD, Prairie View A&M, and Texas A&M-Galveston. Due to the tiebreaker among three teams, UHD secured the second overall seed that features the top four teams in the conference from this past Fall season. UHD will be competing and aiming for the club’s 11th conference championship in club history and their first since the Spring 2020 season. The HCSC Playoff Tournament will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, in the UHD Jesse H. Jones Student Life Center. This will be the last chance for fans to watch volleyball in the Student Life Center before moving into the UHD Wellness and Success Center in January 2023.

Men’s Basketball
For their second straight season, the men’s basketball club team finished the regular season 5-1 and is the No. 1 seed in the Blue Division of the Houston Club Sports Basketball Conference (HCSBC). As the No. 1 seed in their division, the club team receives a first round bye to earn a spot in the HCSBC Final Four Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 6. UHD’s tournament opponent is not named until after the quarterfinals this Friday. The Gators semi-final game is 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, at Prairie View A&M’s Student Recreational Center. If UHD wins in the semifinals, the HCSBC Championship game will be later in the afternoon at 2:15 p.m. in the same location. UHD will be looking to win the club’s first conference championship in the HCSBC and first championship since 2011.

Men’s Baseball
Another club team in action this weekend is the baseball club team. The club is not competing for a conference championship; however, it will be competing against the top collegiate club baseball teams in the region at the 2022 National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) Wood Wars Tournament. This tournament will wrap the team’s Fall season. UHD opens their tournament at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, against Pittsburg State University (Kansas), which won the NCBA Division II World Series in 2019. On Saturday, Nov. 5, the Gators will have a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. versus Texas State University and at 4 p.m. versus Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. All games will be at The Parks at Texas Star in Euless, TX.
