The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) Faculty Senate is inviting all faculty, students (graduate and undergraduate) and staff to a University of Houston System-wide higher education event, "Take Us Higher, The Value and Future of Graduate Education," featuring guest speaker, Sylvia Hurtado, at 9:30 a.m. on March 31 in the Special Events Center of the Academic Building (A300).

"This event hopes to empower our students to find answers to the question 'What educational tools do I need to be successful in the future?' The global economy is challenging us to achieve higher educational plateaus to be competitive and this event will provide a starting point for identifying, valuating and developing those tools," said UHD Faculty Senate President Carolyn Ashe, director of the Institute for Business Ethics and Public Issues and professor in the Marilyn Davies College of Business.

Hurtado is a professor of education and director of the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. With numerous publications on undergraduate education, student development in college and diversity in higher education, Hurtado has focused more than 10 years of research for the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation to identify the conditions for student success in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields and the science behind interventions for underrepresented students in higher education.

Faculty are encouraged to invite their classes to attend. A class sign-in sheet will be provided for students to obtain attendance credit.
