Enrollment Management News: In-Person Events for Students Resume

Summary

By Percy Sandel,
Coordinator of Enrollment Communications and Client Relationship Management

Starting July 12, all UHD staff returned to campus and resumed their normal work schedules prior to the pandemic. As the community returns to campus, a number of in-person student events are taking place to revitalize the campus after more than a year of remote services.

Incoming freshman and transfer students, many of them seeking a robust social environment at UHD beyond our flexible, affordable and quality degree programs, have several opportunities to attend a UHD On-Campus Experience. New Gators will be welcomed to campus by UHD leadership and the Student Transitions team, with opportunities to hear from alumni, student organizations and club sports representatives.

Since this will be the first time on campus for many students, the Gator Crew, a team of UHD students working orientation programs, will be leading campus tours to welcome and familiarize these new Gators with UHD buildings and their classroom locations. This is their opportunity to get to know campus before they start classes in August, getting the inside scoop on the UHD campus and community.

Eugene Bernard, Director of Student Life, who previously oversaw new student orientations, leads this program, along with Jordan Green, Interim Director, Student Transitions and Welcome Center. They are both excited to see the new Gators on campus!

Eugene shared, “I am so excited to finally meet the awesome students that we have connected with throughout our virtual orientations. So far, we’ve served over 2,800 new incoming Freshmen and Transfer Students! We are enthusiastic about finally putting a real face to a Zoom avatar and are thrilled to offer students an opportunity to see our beautiful campus that make UHD feel like home.

Additionally, the Office of Admissions hosted two freshman drive-thru events where new students were invited to campus. As they paraded through, these new Gators were given UHD swag to help show their UHD pride. Guests were entertained by a live zydeco band and received a dinner plate.

In an effort to assist students starting at UHD this fall, the Registrar’s Office recently held a bacterial meningitis vaccine (BMV) clinic in collaboration with Student Health Services. The BMV is required per Texas state law for all students under the age of 22 entering an institution of higher education. This event conveniently allowed students to receive their BMV vaccine on campus, satisfying the state requirement so they can register for classes.

For new and continuing students alike, balancing schooling with professional and personal responsibilities can be a challenge. One of the most convenient options for students is to consolidate their activities by seeking on campus employment. The UHD Main Career Center is hosting the On-Campus Jobs4Gators Fair 2021, both virtually and in-person, this July. Departments across campus are recruiting students for variety of positions. This is a tremendous opportunity for student seeking on-campus employment, whether that be for Federal Work-Study, Texas Work-Study or part-time employment.

The event being held both in-person and virtually signals a trend for UHD. As we return to campus and increase on-campus events and activities, the University plans to continue offering virtual options for students where possible, to make their experience at UHD convenient and flexible.
